The Range came ready-to-roll with a Sun Charger Pro wheelset which we did not have any issues with during our rides. We would have preferred a tubeless wheelset on a trail bike like this but this Charger wheelset was more than adequate. Norco chose to use the Continental X-King 26 x 2. The sidewall was wafer thin and the overall volume of the tire was not sufficient. Even with high PSI we flatted 3 times just while trying to get the action shots with our demo model. Care had to be given when clamping the seat collar but once the magic spot was found, it was smooth-sailing. The WTB Silverado saddle was nice on shorter rides, but on long hauls and on technical trails we found ourselves wishing we had something with a rounded nose and more cushion. Some stuff I looked at before as kind of sketchy was dispatched at a much lower heart rate and much higher speed.
The only real issue on XC rides was the weight 40 lbs is 40lbs regardless of how well it pedals and technical climbing. Care needs to be taken to keep pedals, crank arms and bash guard from contacting trail obstacles, and wresting this bike up steep stuff gets old fast. Expect to walk up some of this stuff unless you are mighty strong and stubborn. The man-made stunty stuff I rode revealed the Truax to be very much at home. I would have probably been happier on the large, rather than the medium I tested.
A bit more front center length would have made me less nervous on the steep stuff, which was where I found myself squeezing the brakes and second-guessing myself. The totem, once broken in, is really smooth and plush.
I really like it. I was initially debating swapping out to a TALAS, but have since decided not to because the Totem just rides so well I am lbs kitted up, and the stock spring in the Totem suits me There is bob, don't get me wrong, but that just forces me to be a smoother pedaler. Anyways, I really recommend the bike. There are definitely some cheaper options out there Norco is almost boutique'ifying itself a little , as well as some better, more expensive options, but I've ridden alot of different bikes, from a lot of different companies, but this one really stacks up to the best of them, I really must say.
For the record, I'd describe myself as an intermediate to advanced rider. The Truax's 7" of travel is enough to have fun anywhere, but not so much to totally eliminate the option of getting to the top under your own power. Likewise, it's geometry also strikes a middle ground between full-on DH slackness and steeper All-Mountain numbers.
Climbers out there should take note of the bike's full length seat tube. This fairytale dreamland is filled with ladder bridges and skinny beams suspended perilously high above the forest floor.
